Barnsley Book Fair Volunteer Guide
THANK YOU for volunteering your time and talents! The Barnsley PTA, Teachers, Staff, Students, and Families sincerely appreciate your help. The Book Fair would not be possible without wonderful volunteers like you!
Please familiarize yourself with the following information in advance of the book fair, and if you have any questions, email barnsleypta@gmail.com.
Prior to the Book Fair

- Sign up for the time slot(s) you are available to volunteer via the Barnsley Book Fair SignUp Genius
- You will receive an email confirmation
- Complete the mandatory training on recognizing and reporting child abuse
- Training is accessible via your myMCPS Classroom/Canvas account: after logging in, click on “Resources” in the left margin
- If completed previously, training certificate is good for 3 years
- Complete the COVID-19 Vaccination Attestation
- Requires volunteers to upload a copy of their COVID-19 vaccination card
- Sign up for the time slot(s) you are available to volunteer via the Barnsley Book Fair SignUp Genius

Day(s) of Volunteering
- Plan to arrive ~10 minutes earlier than your scheduled slot
- Proceed to the main office to sign in and obtain a visitor badge
- Follow book fair signs and proceed to Media Center on the second floor
- Communicate with book fair co-chair(s) or other volunteers about the specific needs during your time slot
- Possible duties:
- Book fair setup
- Move media center tables/furniture
- Arrange scholastic bookcases
- Stack and arrange books; Set up poster displays
- Decorate
- Set up and test registers
- Create area to display and sell items for All for Books
- Label teacher/classroom book bins
- Create binder for teacher wish lists
- Set up student wish lists (paper + pencil attached to clipboards)
- Add signage outside and within school directing volunteers/families to book fair
- Greet students for classroom previews
- Provide brief introduction to the book fair
- Point out where different types of books are located
- Explain and distribute student/teacher wish lists
- Address general questions
- Operate cash registers
- Students can pay via cash, check, voucher, EWallet, or some combination of those
- Adults can pay via cash, check, credit card, voucher, EWallet, or some combination of those
- Register user manual
- Assist students in counting money
- This is especially helpful for younger students and makes the check-out lines run more efficiently
- General helper
- Assist students in locating specific genres or titles
- Help calculate total costs
- Answer questions
- Re-stack and stock books
- Prep clipboards for student/teacher wish lists
- Assist with signage creation/placement
- Count money/tabulate sales at end of day
- Grant teacher/classroom wish list books with ‘All for Books’ balance
- Book fair cleanup
- Pack remaining books and supplies
- Remove decorations
- Move furniture, book shelves, and bookcases
- Shut down and pack up registers
- Remove signage
- Pack teacher wish list binder and classroom bins
- Pack up/return clipboards and pencils
- Book fair setup
