2018-2019 Barnsley Chess Club
2nd – 5th Grade
1st graders with experience are welcome
The Barnsley PTA is pleased to sponsor chess lessons with Russian Chess Master Victor Sherman. Victor has over 30 years experience teaching chess. Some of Victor’s current and former students include several well-known Grandmasters.
Students with or without chess experience are welcome. Students will be grouped for lessons and games based on their ability. Beginners will learn how to play chess while more experienced students will work on improving their strategy. A portion of each class is devoted to instruction and a portion to play. Chess teaches kids to think before they act. They learn strategy, sportsmanship and about the consequences of their decisions. It’s also a lot of fun! Trophies and awards are given at the end of each session!
Time/Place: Thursdays from 8:10 – 9:10am, Media Center
Cost: $135 for Fall session
Fall Session: Sept. 27; Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25; Nov. 1, 8, 15, 29; Dec. 6 (10 classes)

Big Learning Science & Engineering
The Physics of Color and Light
Register and pay online at www.biglearning.org/science
Optrix (grades K-2):
Discover the world of color and light with playful experiments and a couple of tricks along the way! Examine the effect of light on pupils and explore the eye adaptations of nocturnal animals. Use prisms to explore colors and wave lengths. Compare light colors to pigments and explore symmetry and reflection with multiple mirrors and crystals. Test the refractive powers of water and gelatin; explore convex and concave mirrors and magnification; and learn about the ‘persistence of vision’ that explains many common visual effects
Kaleidoscope (grades 3-5):
Beam into the future and experiment with fiber optics! Children will make a model of their eye and test the limits of their own sight to learn about blind spots, peripheral vision, and right/left dominance. They will see how the eye looks up close by dissecting a real cow’s eye and learn how light and color are used to create 3D movies, microscopes, and sunglasses! Experiment with mirrors and lenses to illustrate reflection, symmetry, and refraction.
Register by September 24th to receive our early bird special of $10 off for each S&E class!

Our curriculum was designed for kids who are new to coding or have experience and are ready for more advanced concepts. When you’re coding with Scratch, the only limit is your imagination!
Robotics Club (grades 2 & up):
Make LEGO® WeDo 2.0 SpaceBots in this session of Robotics Club! Each week, students build and code a different space-themed robot using LEGO® gears, pulleys, axles, motors and sensors. These are the droids you’re looking for!
